I have a new paper now published in the International Journal of Educational Research. It is co-authored by Dr Udi Samanhudi (UNTIRTA, Indonesia), relates to writing and knowledge production in the Indonesian university context, and thereby builds on my prior work in this area of interest. From academic writing to academics writing: Transitioning towards literacies for research productivity
Abstract
This article examines how international shifts in research writing, including performance policies and competitive research evaluation regimes, are creating a new set of expectations upon academics in Indonesia. Utilising a social practice approach to literacy, and with a cross-disciplinary sample of twenty-two academics at both private and public universities, we explore how early-career academics in Indonesia transition to research productivity. We investigate the tools and resources academics draw upon, and how academic success, prestige, and internationalism are conceptualised. We note that academics must amalgamate new literacy practices to contend with multiple and conflicting demands on time, abilities, allegiances and the double-bind of local versus international research impact, as well as inequalities of experience constituting peripheries within an already existing periphery.
Abstrak
Artikel ini mengkaji bagaimana pergeseran praktik penulisan ilmiah, termasuk kebijakan-kebijakan terkait kinerja serta aturan evaluasi penelitian yang semakin kompetitif, menciptakan harapan-harapan baru di kalangan akademisi di Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan praktik sosial untuk literasi dengan melibatkan 22 akademisi lintas disiplin di universitas swasta dan negeri sebagai sampel. Dalam penelitian ini, kami mengeksplorasi proses peralihan akademisi pemula di Indonesia menuju produktivitas penelitian. Kami menyelidiki alat dan sumber daya yang digunakan oleh kelompok akademisi ini. Kami juga mengkaji bagaimana kesuksesan akademik, prestise, dan internasionalisme dikonseptualisasikan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa kelompok akademisi ini harus menggabungkan praktik literasi baru untuk menghadapi berbagai tuntutan yang saling bertentangan seperti terkait dengan waktu, kemampuan, loyalitas dan dampak ganda penelitian lokal versus internasional, serta ketidaksetaraan pengalaman yang membentuk kaum ‘peneliti pinggiran’ dalam kelompok ‘penelitian pinggiran’ yang sudah ada.
