Lectures at Jilin University 2023

Earlier this year I undertook an extended research visit to China and conducted some lectures for both Jilin University, fruitfully following on from last year’s stint with them, and Changchun University of Science & Technology. Both sets of talks were well attended and allowed me to continue themes talked about in last year’s activities.

The lectures were an opportunity for me to build on ideas developed from last year’s schedule. This time I paid particular attention to how Literacy Studies can be connected to, and augmented by, discourse analysis techniques and sociolinguistics.

I also took around 2000 pictures during the trip as part of some linguistic landscaping, a component of my heritage literacy project. This data has an important role in forthcoming work, though I utilised some of it in the lectures to see how people would respond. I look forward to sharing on this in due course as the content of these talks will feature in work that is currently being written.

I am very grateful to Profs Jiang Feng, Zhang Yining, and Xue Yahong for their support, and the many students who attended and offered poignant questions for discussion.
